Have you ever bought a pair of jeans that were too long? I am only 5’1″ and jeans are never the correct length on me. Where are all my short friends? I recently shared on my Instagram stories and Facebook Stories how I cut my jeans to fit my 5’1″ height. I received so many messages asking for a tutorial.

As you can see the jeans are too long on me. You may be surprised at just how easy it is to cut your jeans to fit your height. It may sound a little intimidating at first but after I show you step by step you will see how easy it is.
The jeans I am wearing can be found here. I am wearing a size 26. They have a raw hem bottom which makes them super easy to cut.
How to determine the Length of Jeans:
I like more of a cropped jean so I usually like it to hit right at my ankle bone or right above it. I especially like this for spring and summer. Feel free to do any length.
Cuff the Jeans
Here is an example of cuffing the jeans up. The lower crease is where you will use the chalk or pencil to make your line from the inside of the cuff. The line you create will be where you cut.
Supplies Needed:
- Chalk or Pencil (use a pencil for white jeans)
- Sewing shears or a good pair of scissors
How to Cut Your Jeans:
STEP 1
Try on your jeans and stand in front of a tall mirror. Cuff the jeans upwards towards your knees to your desired length. You can start a little longer and then cut more off later if you need to. I did this with the first pair of denim I ever cut. You can always take more length off. You just can’t add more. I like mine
STEP 2
Before marking the area try the jeans with different styled shoes that you would wear with them. For example, a pair of sandals, flats, sneakers, or heels. Just to make sure you like the way they look.
STEP 3
Use a piece of chalk or a pencil to mark the inside of the cuff by running it along the crease where the fold is. See the photos and video I made for more of a visual.
STEP 4
Take off the jeans and lay flat on a table or ground. Unfold the cuffed part of the jeans. Start on one leg and cut the line you made with a good pair of sewing shears or scissors.
STEP 5
Create a raw hem by using your fingers to fray the jeans. Or use the blade of your scissors and scrape the hem. Pulling with my fingers has worked the best for me.
Tip:
Do not stress about it being perfect. Trust me, you can do this. If there is a small flaw, no one will know, but you.
This is the piece I cut off my jeans.
How to Create a Raw Hem on Jeans:
Here is after I cut them. I love how they turned out. After cutting them, create a raw hem by using your fingers to pull at the bottom to fray the jeans. Using the blade of your scissors to scrape the hem can be done. Pulling with my fingers has worked the best for me.
Here is how they turned out. The perfect length for my 5’1″ height.
